Ed Motta

“Ever since the late 1980s Ed Motta is the reference for jazzy soul from Brazil.”, says Rolling Stone about The Colossus of Rio, who, in his 40s, is a living music legend in Brazil already. Amongst others, colleagues & friends like Gilles Peterson, Roy Ayers, Seu Jorge, Bo Diddley & Ryuichi Sakamoto worked with him in the past. AOR music has always been “his first love”, and so it’s quite evident that his upcoming album will be deep-rooted in this musical genre.
The internationally acclaimed singer, composer, entertainer & bon vivant has always had a soft spot for soul, jazz, funk & rock music and the songs on his early Brazilian albums outranged the complexity of his radio hits by far. “Dwitza” and “Aystelum” set standards, ranging from “space jazz to Broadway musical pastiche, throwing in ballads, funk, soul-dance & pop-samba” (The Guardian). Continuously working on his music, in 2016 Ed Motta released “Perpetual Gateways” in Europe. Produced by great Kamau Kenyatta, this album offered a perfect blend of modal jazz and soul. With his voluminous baritone, his amazing talent on piano & Fender Rhodes, his great sense of humor and his tight & funky band, Ed’s live shows always are an exciting journey through his boundless musical world.

„Ever since the late 80s (Ed Motta) is the reference for jazzy Soul from Brazil. (…) His baritone thrones in voluminous lushness. (…) In his unexcitedness lies an immense perfection, in the relaxed manner a grand love of detail."
Rolling Stone
„Seit Donny Hathaway hat kaum jemand so geklungen, das ist der Maßstab, der hier angesetzt werden muss. Butterweicher Jazz-Soul-Pop wie zu besten Steely-Dan-Zeiten."
