Mari Boine is a singer, musician, songwriter, and activist from Sápmi, Norway. Her music is infused with Sami roots (joik) and shamanistic beats in combination with jazz, rock, and electronic sounds.
Since her career debut in the early 80s, Mari has released 14 albums, toured worldwide, and collaborated with stellar jazz musicians like Jan Garbarek, Bobby McFerrin, and Bugge Wesseltoft. Mari also shared the stage with iconic artist Sinéad O'Connor and fellow Canadian indigenous activist Tanya Tagaq.
From the start, Mari Boine has been one of the most outspoken and vital representatives of the Sámi culture. As an artist and activist, she has worked tirelessly to recognize and preserve the indigenous Sámi culture, thus inspiring younger generations to be proud of their unique roots.
With Gula Gula (Hear the Voices of the Foremothers), her icon album released internationally in 1990 on RealWorld label, Mari Boine has won the first of her four Spellemannprisen (Norway’s Grammy Awards).
In the same year, she collaborated with Peter Gabriel as well as international artists like Sting, Laurie Anderson, Gipsy Kings, Chrissy Hynde and Geoffrey Oryema among others in the breathtaking album and TV documentary One World One Voice, a BBC television production by Andy Ward, directed by Kevin Godley, under the music direction of Rupert Hines.
Throughout her career, Mari has also received prizes such as the Knight of 1st Class in the order of St. Olav for her versatile artistic work by the Royal Court, the Nordic Council Music Prize, the Arts Council Norway Honorary Award, the Sámi Council’s Honorary Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award (Spellemann 2018).
Her last studio albums are AMAME (September 2023, produced by Bugge Wesseltoft) and See The Woman (2017), her first record in the English language, a tribute to indigenous poets from different nationalities.
Mari Boine just finished a new full-band album, ALVA, to be released in September 2024.
The new year also brings a few other projects. Mari Boine is currently participating in the TV show “Hver Gang Vi Møtes/ Every Time We Meet,” a program of 7 episodes where she shares the stage with great Norwegian artists and has the opportunity to interpret their songs. And to hear her songs interpreted by them.
Six singles and two duets will be released during the show's season (January and February).
Also, Mari Boine is part of the opening festivities in early February in Bodø, this year the European Capital of Culture (2024).
There, she will perform with her band and also be on stage playing a role in Aahka (Memory of Water), the final part of the trilogy (Water, Fire, and Wind), a production by the South Sámi Theater company, Åarjelhsaemien Teatere.
Through song and joik, Aahka tells the story of how humanity lived (happily in) MORE IN harmony with nature and the universe.
Mari Boine - known as the Ambassador and Matriarch of Sámi culture - is honoured to share her music in different countries all over the world.
Stay tuned for her tour dates in 2024!
