Roberto Fonseca, one of the most prominent pianists in contemporary Cuban music, is known for his masterful fusion of jazz, tradition, and modern sounds. Born and raised in Havana, Fonseca represents the vibrant musical culture of Cuba in all its facets. With extraordinary talent that includes both his virtuosic piano skills and exceptional ability to improvise, he has established himself as one of the leading musicians in the global jazz scene.
Fonseca began his career in the 1990s, performing early on with some of the greatest names in Cuban jazz. As a member of the renowned Buena Vista Social Club, he contributed to the worldwide recognition of Cuban music. Since then, he has established himself as a solo artist, releasing a series of albums that reflect both traditional Cuban heritage and international influences. His albums, such as Elengó (2018) and Síntesis (2022), showcase his remarkable ability to blend jazz with traditional Cuban rhythms, African grooves, and modern electronic sounds. His album Yo was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Latin Jazz Album category in 2014.
Throughout his career, Fonseca has collaborated with some of the most well-known jazz greats, including the legendary trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Chucho Valdés, and saxophonist Joe Lovano. These collaborations, along with his own innovative musicianship, have earned him international recognition and made him one of the most important ambassadors of Cuban music.
With his latest album La Gran Diversión (2023), Fonseca pays tribute to the era when Cuban music filled European nightclubs and cabarets with vibrant dance nights. In a large ensemble featuring eight Cuban musicians, he premiered the album at the prestigious Jazz in Marciac Festival. This work once again highlights his ability to evolve Cuba’s musical heritage in an innovative way, making it accessible to a global audience.
