Born in New Jersey, Di Meola first rose to international prominence in 1974 when he joined Chick Corea’s groundbreaking fusion group Return to Forever. Following three landmark recordings with the band, he launched a solo career that would establish him as one of the defining voices of contemporary instrumental music. Albums such as Land of the Midnight Sun, Elegant Gypsy and Casino are now considered classics of the jazz fusion genre and helped cement his reputation as a pioneering guitarist and composer.
Di Meola also achieved worldwide acclaim through the legendary Guitar Trio alongside Paco de Lucía and John McLaughlin. Their iconic live recording Friday Night in San Francisco became one of the best-selling acoustic guitar albums of all time, surpassing four million copies sold worldwide. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with an extraordinary range of artists, including Luciano Pavarotti, Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock, Phil Collins, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder.
His achievements have earned him numerous Grammy Awards and nominations, twelve Guitar Player Magazine Awards, the Miles Davis Award from the Montreal Jazz Festival, and an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music. With more than six million records sold and over thirty albums released as a leader, Al Di Meola remains one of the most celebrated guitarists in contemporary music.
