Jupiter / Okwess

| Democratic Republic of the Congo

Jean-Pierre Bokondji, aka ‘Jupiter’ was born in Kinshasa spent a large part of his childhood and adolescence living in Tanzania and East Germany (GDR), where his father worked as an attaché at
the Congolese embassy. In 1979 he returned to D.R. Congo and threw himself into another dimension, the antithesis of the life he’d known until then. Growing up in Germany, Jupiter listened to the best American soul: James Brown, The Jackson 5, The Temptations or Kool and the Gang.

Back in the Congo, he discovered the ultra-dominant Congolese rumba style, but also a multitude of other rhythms and styles that vegetate in the shadows of rumba, all strangely reminiscent of funk, soul and rock. With the spark provided by this apparent complicity between Congolese traditions and Western music, Jupiter decided to create his own mode of musical expression.

Since than several musical projects followed. He has been part of Damon Albarns “Africa Express”, played at different major Rock, Pop and World Music Festivals and will release his new album in july 2017 (produced by Marc-Antoine Moreau, the producer of Amadou & Mariam). When the band  enter the stage the crowd is within seconds fascinated by the powerful presence. The rhythmic bass, hypnotic guitar sounds complemented by keyboard and rattles match perfectly to Jupiters dramatic vocals. For many spectators Jupiter /Okwess has been one of the highlights of the Womex 2016 and we can look forward to many high-energetic shows in Europe in 2017.
